Todays The Day (Step 1)

Where do I start?

I’ve been doing my Step 1 for well over a month and it’s finished. Today I meet with my sponsor to go through it. I’d like to say I found the experience easy, but it has been difficult seeing how my addiction affected me and everyone involved.

I’ve felt like breaking down at times and putting it in the bin. I’ve even put it off but it needed to be done for me to finally realise the pain and behaviours my addiction has caused.

I’ve tried every way to stop my addiction before in the past ie. moving as far away from Doncaster as possible, long prison spells and short ones, moving to different areas, methadone, subutex, substituting one drug for another.

The 12 Step programme is working wonders for me and I’m so grateful for the man it has turned me into. It has taken away the desire to use (which has never happened in the past).

I hope all goes well today which think it will because I’ve got the best of sponsors which I am grateful for. Just taking it a day at a time and keeping it simple.

Hi Mark,

Have put your blog on the family channel as we are having a busy day and didn’t want to hold off sharing your words on such an important day for you.

What you are doing takes great courage and I wish you well on your journey.

Mark I remember the powerful experience of working through step one. It was one of the most difficult things I have done, but one of the most honest and real things.

Overall it had the effect of having to feel genuine emotions, like shame and sorrow and work my way through them. When I did step one it had been a long time since I’d really felt.

Good luck today and with the rest of the steps. (One at at time)

You know there’s refreshing similarities in how you speak about your recovery method 12 steps and mine CBT, and that just reiterates the futility in the recovery feud, good luck with the steps and thanks for an insightful blog

Well done Mark. A great step forward (excuse the terrible pun!). The processes involved in going through the steps can be really powerful – just as CBT stages are too. Tony – Great comment.

Mark, I’m so pleased to hear you’ve found something that’s working for you. I hope you feel supported by our community every step of the way (man, I’ve done it again!).

Keep us posted! Sar
