I assume this is part of the Naltrexone pilot project. Relatives Of Drug Abuse RODA (A wonderful organisation in Sheffield) are piloting the scheme and the response has been very limited.
It would appear many people who have a loved one who is “clean” struggle with the idea that their relative might use again, which is unfortunate but also understandable.
Also the recipeint of the drug is also at an increased risk of overdose as although the effects of the opiate are blocked from the brain – the heroin is still in their bloodstream – so if when the Naltroxone wears off after an hour or so and if they go and use again it is possible they may go over.
I am not trying to put people off, I think it is a great idea I just wanted to give people a bit of info.
I have confused myself (not a difficult task) I think I meant to write Naloxone not Naltroxone doooohhhhh!!!!!!!
