Androcles, Blog

Skinning your knees

Some say that resentment is a pitfall for the unwary in recovery and as I’m a bit of an expert on the subject. I’m trying to put a positive spin on the tragic fact that my last blog was taken down.

I have had many thoughts and reflections on the nuts and bolts of what happened, but they aren’t fully formed yet and I’ll wait until they are before deciding whether to air them.

I fully understand why the blog was pulled and support the moderators of Wired In in their decision. However, I doubt if I will ever get over the fact that I was on target to own the blog with the most ever comments! Oh the palpable grief…

The achievement will never make the pages of the Guinness Book of World Records now and I will remain basking in the shadows of inauspicious obscurity. (Fancy way of saying nobody much will notice).

The whole thing did get me thinking about how we, as human beings, and I in particular manage life when it does not go our way and deal with people who don’t behave according to our own values.

For me, it’s like falling and scraping my knees. I can cry, blame the stone I stumbled on and feel very sorry for myself, focussing on the inherent unfairness of life (relax, I’m not that upset about losing my blog) or I can get up, dust down my grazes and get back on my way.

In the early days of my recovery, I was constantly skinning my knees and paying a bit too much attention to the stones, uneven ground and trip wires set by others instead of to the importance of getting back to my path.

Sometimes I do need a hand up again from others. If there is one remarkable and dramatic difference to my life in recovery compared to active addiction, it is the wealth and breadth of my support network. I have dozens of pairs of hands ready to get me to my feet again.

Of course, I do need to be aware of life obstacles and dangers, especially the ones that might cause more than a scraped pair of knees, but if I pay them too much attention I increase their power. If I pay my values, spirit and recovery more attention then I increase their power. Or so I’ve found.

Not sure why I felt the need to put this down in a blog, but it’s helped me!

GREAT blog Androcles – you had me laughing out loud, then finished it off with some great observations that I think sum up life in general -very useful!

Great to hear that you have such excellent support around you – I’m sure you had to work hard to build that up – but certainly worth the effort!!

Thanks!

Ah yes androcles (thanks for your support on my blog) The great lesson of patience and tolerance raised its difficult head yet again,,, i love what you say about increasing the power of the neg or pos, so simple but i can forget the basics sometimes.

When im in conflict corny as it sounds i ask my self “what would love do” the awnsers come but i dont always use them, guess im not perfect yet! i will keep practicing till i accept Im human and i dont have to be perfect , as some days id swear im in charge! lol

big hug

I like the idea of ‘what would love do’? (once I stopped cringing and took it seriously). Makes you think.

Now, ‘what would Androcles do’? That’s a different story. Like the Lion in the Wizard of Oz, that’s sometimes cry, sometimes run away and finally sometimes roar. Or squeak; depends on what sort of mood I’m in…

Oh, and Annemarie, great blog; never for a second dull. What a fan base you have!

lol aye well i doubt any of those fans take me as seriously as i take my self some days, lol. i think i identify with toto, dorothys wee dog who get her into all the trouble in the first place… Richard Jensen points out in his analysis of TWOO that the name Toto was likely a reference to prohibitionists (that is, “teetotalers”) lol.

A brilliant tale of morality and possibly of the politics of the day when it was written and also now funnily enough. The chap who went on to write a few more adventures in oz also spoke about wireless telephones, remember this was back at the turn of the 20th century….
but for storys within the storys i love The matrix, which is on just now.
Hope all is well and big hug x
