Shed your tears and walk away

There has been a great deal of commentary about the above film that has been recently shown in London and Sheffield. It looks at the impact of drugs and alcohol on the community of Hebden Bridge, West Yorkshire.

Sadly, as the film was being premiered, one of the people in the film died. His death has left his mother without two of her sons.

Subsequently, there has been many articles, both locally and nationally (Independent, Sunday 1st November) (http://www.hebdenbridge.co.uk), and much hand-wringing about what can be done to help address the so called problems.

I will be attending a meeting about this issue on Wednesday and would appreciate comments from anyone who has a view…

Havn’t seen the film, would like to though but doubt it will be screened in my backwater town of ignorance, Chorley Lancashire.
Listened to the interview attached to your blog, it raises interesting questions about an era of lost hope, of people with no direction in life, people who have not been afforded the chances of a good education due to their geographical position and people left behind by the speed of change in the employment requirements. These are the unfortunate consequences of rapid change in society, i believe were running to fast in the west for the good of our health.
All this said what ever life deals you it can’t be a justification to use, but life and your environment can be one hell of an enabler.
I hope one day the level of support will be equal in all areas, citles and backwater towns alike, but in reality this will probably never happen, maybe we should all move to the city when in recovery to give us the best chance possible, i have honestly considered it myself.
