Here is a link to an interesting article in the British Medical Journal.
It is about the dynamic spread of happiness in a large social network over 20 years in the Framingham Heart Study. The study concludes that people’s happiness depends on the happiness of others with whom they are connected. This provides further justification for seeing happiness, like health, as a collective phenomenon.
It also gives us some encouraging evidence for the development of recovery communities and/or communities of recovery etc.
Happy New Year to all
cheers Mark.
Satsanga
“Only a strong soul can keep itself glowing in isolation and the beginning will do well to take the opportunity that come in his way to strengthen his own aspiration by communion with others who share them” Swami Sivananda
Our first experiences of pain often have to do with primary relationships and these same relationships tend to define our behaviors in later years. We all need and enjoy the sense of belonging we find with others but addiction breaks these bonds, it is a disease of isolation. People in recovery benefit from group support and being connected with others trying to cope with similar problems, this is the fellowship of 12-steps and the satsanga of spiritual retreats. On retreat the daily schedule is balanced between time alone, workshop/class time and ‘social’ time with other guests. As sobriety is maintained and serenity is gained, retreats can become less about the group and more about silence and solitude. However, because of the danger of relapse and the tendency of addicts to isolate, satsanga is always very important.
