National Recovery Walk, Glasgow 2010

National Recovery Walks is now organising the 2nd annual Recovery Walk! We are asking you to join us in this dramatic display of support for recovery from alcohol and other drug addiction.

Over the last few years here in the UK recovered people have taken significant strides in “putting a face on recovery”.

We are the faces of your neighbours, business leaders, school teachers, clergy, police officers and others representative of your community. We believe that by being public about our recovery and through the power of our personal stories, we have incredible potential to become a teaching and healing force.

Indeed, by having the courage to proclaim that “recovery from addiction is a reality” in our lives, we believe we can help shape public policy and begin to reduce the stigma surrounding addiction.

We have made provisional arrangments to meet on Saturday, September 25th, 2010 at 3pm in Glasgow’s George Square, where we hope thousands of individuals will offer themselves as “living proof” that recovery is real.

We need your help to remove barriers to recovery and open new doors for those still struggling with alcohol and other drug addiction.

Please support National Recovery Walks and the recovery movement by pledging your personal support by attending and walking in the 2nd Annual Walk for Recovery from Alcohol and Other Drug Addiction.

Please register your interest in taking part in the walk or volunteering to help organise at:

September the 25th seems a long way of but I will be there with you and many others on the day. I attended the Recovery Walk in Inverness on 26/9/09 which was a moving experience. SMART Recovery UK supported this event which was organised by volunteers themselves. Images can be downloaded at:

I put this up as an event on face book the other day, we have 31 confirmed people attending 53 mabye attending and 503 awaiting confimation…. my goodness i did not think face book was this powerfull, people from across Europe writing to me on facebook wanting to attend this could turn out to be something really special.
I will also be updating this blog with the time and place of the first meeting of the group who will organise the day itself and a list of the positions available for those who want to get involved.

I’m laughing here, as I’ve just come on to comment that I’ve just RSVP’d on Facebook! Noticed this blog of yours a few days ago Anne Marie and was going to pass the word around on Facebook through groups I’m involved in!! Will still do so but will point people via the link to the events page. I can’t believe this is happening so fast to be honest.

Hope you’re well and in good spirit and still fag-less!

Hi Annemarie. Just seen the above re- baton for 2010 and thought you were holder of the batton which was handed over to yourself in Liverpool? I also am wondering what the plans are regarding the future recovery marches, as i have mentioned few times before about Blackpool hosting the next Recovery March after Glasgow, which had mentioned way back before the Liverpool March and wonder who actually is going to decide on the way forward as this grows, as with this becoming such a large event and will grow over the years, and getting recognition already, it looks like a steering / action group maybe needed very soon to decide on future plans, and would very much like to get involved in any plans of such a group and assist in developing such a group for the leaders in recovery from various areas around the UK …… ROLL ON GLASGOW …… I Really Cannot Wait and still love to have chance to help in some way, even though living in Blackpool pal …. Hugs xxxxx
