Wired In envisions a community that enables individuals to access the tools they need to support their own Recovery and the Recovery of others. Wired In envisions a safe and welcoming environment where knowledge and experience, celebration and loss, lessons learned and mistakes made can be shared openly.
I like these wee paragraphs from ‘Towards a Recovery Movement’.
“The long term fate of this movement may hinge on its ability to tolerate differences and tolerate boundary ambiguity while forsaking calls to create a closed club whose exclusiveness would leave many suffering people refused entry at its doorway”
“Somewhere in this movement’s maturation, a message of unification needs to be extended that psychologically and socially links the growing number of recovery groups and solo flyers into a community of shared experience that can transcend differences and allow it to speak powerfully on one issue: The very real hope for permanent recovery from addiction”
“It is crucial that a way be found to transcend the internalised shame that turns members of stigmatised groups upon each other in frenzies of mutual scapegoating”
“The most serious battles fought by this movement are best waged, not with each other, but with more formidable forces in the culture that seek to objectify, demonise and sequester all those with AOD problems”

During the lunch break at the NRW planning meeting, an open meeting of Narcotics Anonymous will take place for all who are interested to come in and observe.
Open NA Meeting
Friday 22nd January
1pm till 2pm
( SDF) Scottish Drugs Forum
91 Mitchell Street
Glasgow G1 3LN
An open meeting is an NA meeting that may be attended by anyone (e.g., judges, probation officers, professionals, family members) interested in how we have found recovery from the disease of addiction. Verbal participation, however, is limited to NA members only.
An open meeting allows people from outside the fellowship to observe what Narcotics Anonymous is and how it functions. This can be very helpful to those individuals who are striving to reach a decision regarding their personal status as an addict.
An open meeting in Narcotics Anonymous is one method our groups use to achieve their primary purpose of carrying the message to the addict who still suffers. Some groups also have open meetings as a way of allowing non-addict friends and relatives of NA members to celebrate recovery anniversaries with them.
For those of you interested in coming to the full planning day, see you all on the 22nd January at:

Thanks everyone who has responded on the blog and to me personally. So far about 30 of the great and good have confirmed their attendance, so who’s coming? Everyone from family members, charity directors, strategic leads, researchers, service providers, service users, old and new, (many of these doubling as people who have recovered also) from across the whole UK.
A full list of attendees will be published for you perusal and a small report on what happened on the day – we will get someone on the day to volunteer to do this. I have to say, I will be interested to see how well people respond to being asked to doing jobs, commitments etc for nothing other than the feel good factor and the growth of a group of people representative of those interested in assisting people in their search for recovery.
So far so good as I have to tell you I am surprised that already many of those committed to coming along to the first planning meeting have also already committed to offering both financial support and commitment to making the NRW a leading organisation and a success.
So what are NRW trying to do? Well it aims to put a positive face on recovery through advocacy, education, and service, in order to end discrimination surrounding addiction and recovery, open new doors and remove barriers to recovery and ensure that all people in recovery and people seeking recovery are treated with dignity and respect. Sounds simple and straight forward doesn’t it!
Anyway folks, on the day we will also be taking the opportunity to have workshops and discussion around Emerging Recovery Organisations: Governance; Structures and Finance so if anyone wants anything in particular raised or on the agenda for the day please let me know if possible before the 18th of this month.
For those who are still wanting to come but who haven’t yet confirmed yet please do so – either here on the blog or at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)

The venue for the first planning meeting of National Recovery Walks (NRW) will be at SDF offices in Glasgow’s Mitchell Street, many thanks to Stephen Malloy for arranging this.
As well as the distribution of commitments to various jobs to organise the march, there will be discussions/workshops on Emerging Recovery Organisations: Governance; Structures and Finance. We will also be putting together some sort of shadow board/committee for NRW from the people who turn up or express an interest, on the day.
This is an open invitation to all those willing to get involved from politicians, workers, those in and seeking recovery, researchers, concerned significant others, commissioners, etc etc.. the only requirement for involvement is to be supportive.
If you can’t make it on the day but would like to take on one of the commitments or have experience setting up either charitable body, non profit org or social enterprises etc please contact me at the email address or phone number below.
The Draft mission statement below is also up for amendment and discussion on the day.
NRW works to celebrate and honour recovery in all its diversity.
NRW works to support, mobilize and organize advocates who are working to:
Break down barriers that preclude access to recovery
Change public attitudes to prioritize addiction recovery and show the public and policymakers that recovery is happening for hundreds of thousands of people across the UK. NRW welcomes participation from all individuals and organizations that support these core principles.

The proposed Walk planning meeting date is the afternoon 22nd of January 2010 in Glasgow, Scotland. This is not set in stone but I would rather have it happen before we get into February.
I have registered the Walk with marches and processions at Glasgow city council for 25th September and I am hoping also to secure a booking for the city chambers in George Square to hold a dance/concert/celebration event for those who attend the walk; but I may have to ask David Best or someone else with clout, maybe the new recovery consortium director Dougie Patterson, to secure it for us all.
It obviously makes perfect sense to link with GRAND week and for everyone to be involved in the day.
I have had a few wee chats with Mark Gilman around the planning day as an opportunity for workshops or discussion to take place around Emerging Recovery Organisations: Governance; Structures and Finance.
As people from all over the UK have already committed to attending the planning day for the Walk it seems like a good idea for us to have these discussion/workshops on the same day.
There has been a bit of delay in announcing the planning day in January (getting a holding/host account for payments etc, sorted now with the wiredin board of directors, we needed a paypal address) but, given the circumstances, this may be fruitful if the Scottish Recovery Consortium want to join in and add to the agenda.
Please let me know what you all think, the model we are using below for funding comes from The Connecticut Community for Addiction Recovery (CCAR) model see their website at
Hope you are all well and in good spirits

National Recovery Walks envisions a world where the power, hope, and healing of recovery from alcohol and other drug addiction are thoroughly understood and embraced.
Our mission is to put a positive face on recovery through advocacy, education, and service, in order to end discrimination surrounding addiction and recovery, open new doors and remove barriers to recovery, and ensure that all people in recovery and people seeking recovery are treated with dignity and respect.
When people ask what is the purpose of NRW the “one-liner” is that NRW organizes the recovery community to put a face on recovery and to build recovery capital.
The first official meeting of organising the 2nd National Recovery Walk will take place on the afternoon 22nd of January in Glasgow, Scotland. This is an open invitation to everyone in the addiction field – politicians, policy makers, families, service providers, researchers, those seeking recovery and those currently recovering and recovered.
This will essentially be a day of organising those involved and solidifying their commitments to each voluntary position.
Some of the positions available will include:
1. Registration: Coordinator – Register Treatment Providers, Teams and Individuals.
2. T-shirts: Coordinator – Distribute sweatshirts, T-shirts and hats etc.
3. Water/Fruit: Coordinator – Distribute water and fruit to each individual.
4. Balloons: Coordinator – Arrive early (7 am) and blow up balloons. This year we’re trying to craft a balloon arch that we can use as a symbol to freedom!
5. Children’s Activities: Coordinator – Organise stuff to keep children entertained.
6. Survey: Coordinator – Walk through the crowd and have participants fill out the short survey, the more we fill out the better. After participant fills out survey or declines to participate, stick a sticker dot on him/her so they don’t get asked over and over again.
7. Greeters/Stewards etc
8. Stage Help: Coordinator – Assist with the set up of the stage as directed. Set up the “screen” mikes platform etc.
9. Cleaner uppers – Make sure we leave the venue and Walk route in good order.
10. Rovers: Coordinator – Basically organise a group of volunteers who are available for anyone who may need help on the day.
11. Willing to help set up charity/social enterprise/ (experience vital)
Remember we have as yet no funding from anywhere and most of the above will come from within the already existing recovery communities across the UK.
All ADATs /ADPs throughout the UK will be approached and their financial support will be requested, a list of donations from each team will listed on http://www.wiredin.org
Wiredin have agreed to host a holding account for this year only and the aim of the NRW committee is to, after this year, have their own status as a charity/social enterprise which will develop and be dependent on the skills and commitment of those involved in holding this years and subsequent years Walks.
